What it actually takes
Worth knowing before you sign up, so you can decide honestly.
It is a real time commitment.
A novel is usually 80,000 to 100,000 words. Most authors ask for notes back within two to four weeks. If you cannot finish, telling the author early is genuinely fine and far better than going quiet.
Honest beats nice.
Authors are not looking for praise here. The useful note is the one that says where you got bored, confused, or stopped believing a character. You do not need to be an editor. You need to say what you felt and where.
Most beta reading is unpaid.
The trade is early access and a say in the book. Some authors do pay, and you can mark on your profile that you are open to paid work with your rate. Nothing is deducted from you either way.
The manuscript is not yours to share.
You are reading unpublished work. Do not post it, forward it, or quote it publicly. Read it, give your notes, keep it to yourself.
