If you choose to list your profile in Find Readers, authors can browse readers by genre, see how fast they read, and invite you when their manuscript looks like a good fit. You decide which invitations to accept.

Read in your browser. Leave comments in the margin as you go and answer the author's questions along the way. No app. No download.
What it actually takes
Worth knowing before you sign up, so you can decide honestly.
It is a real time commitment.
A novel takes time to read, and authors usually set a deadline of a few weeks. If you can't finish, telling the author early is genuinely fine and far better than going quiet.
Honest beats nice.
The most useful note is the one that says where you got bored, confused, or stopped believing a character. You don't need to be an editor. You just need to say what you felt, and where you felt it.
Most beta reading is unpaid.
Beta reading is usually an exchange: you get early access to a book and the chance to influence it before publication. Some authors choose to pay their beta readers, and they'll say so on their listing. BetaShelf never charges readers to participate. Reader profiles are for sharing your reading interests and finding books to beta read. They're not for advertising services, finding clients, or sending unsolicited offers. Keep conversations with authors on BetaShelf, and don't share email addresses, phone numbers, or other apps.
Keep the manuscript private.
You're reading unpublished work. Please don't post it, forward it, quote it publicly, share it with anyone else, or put any part of it into an AI tool. Read it, write your notes yourself, and keep the manuscript to yourself.
